Dr Ezekiel Olusegun Alawale

Dr Ezekiel Olusegun Alawale was born on 3 October 1956 in Igbaye, Osun State, Nigeria. He grew up in a family of seven and is the only surviving child of his parents. He spent the early part of his life working on the farm with his father before attending Odo-Oti Grammar School from 1973 to 1977 and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, from 1977 to 1979 for his A levels.

He entered the University of Ibadan in 1979 and graduated in 1984. While at the university, he led a village evangelism team that visited surrounding communities. After graduation, he completed a one-year internship at Baptist Medical Centre, Ogbomosho, between 1984 and 1985.

In 1989, Dr Alawale began postgraduate surgical training at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital. He later moved to University College Hospital, Ibadan, in 1991 and completed his training in 1998. He lectured in Surgery at the University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, served as Chief Resident in Surgery and was appointed Consultant in Paediatric Surgery after gaining his fellowship in 1995.

In 1996, he worked briefly in a paediatric surgery unit in Mannheim, Germany, before returning to Nigeria in 1997. In February 1998, he took study leave from the University of Ibadan to continue his paediatric surgery development in the United Kingdom.

Dr Alawale holds fellowships of the West African College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In 1996, he received the International College of Surgeons award for young surgeons and attended the German Surgical Society conference in Berlin.

In March 2001, he founded God’s Vineyard Ministries, commonly known as GVC, with its headquarters in Nottingham. The demands of travelling between Brighton and Nottingham led him to leave surgery and retrain as a General Practitioner through the vocational training scheme in Mansfield.

He is married to Dr Olufunmilayo Alawale, a physiotherapist and former lecturer at the University of Ibadan. Together, they founded and co-pastor God’s Vineyard Ministries and have three children: Tosin, Toyin and Tomi.

Dr Alawale is Chairperson of Majority Black Led Churches Nottingham and works as a General Practitioner at Bilborough Medical Centre, Nottingham. The Centre for Medical Informatics and Professional Development grew from his desire to give back to humanity through the medical profession.
