Since 2017 till date a group of highly trained and experienced Medical Professionals in various specialties have visited University College Hospital (UCH), the pilot scheme Institution to conduct seminars, workshops, grand rounds, trainings, performed joint operations and clinical consultations.
In November 2019, another significant outreach was conducted by the CMIPD team, in collaboration with various departments within UCH. The activities carried out during this visit included expert evaluation of medical equipment, surgeries, staff training, and capacity
building.

Departmental Collaborations
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The CMIPD gynaecological team, led by Dr. Kunle Ajayi, extensively assessed equipment within the department, including the cervical cytology/colposcopy room, diagnostic laparoscopy room, laparoscopic stack in the main theatre, and labour ward. They provided expert advice and recommendations as needed.
Surgery
The department of surgery benefited from a two-day lecture series:
- Day 1: Multidisciplinary Team Approach to the Management of Cancer
- Day 2: Breast Reconstruction and Aesthetics
Attendees included consultants and surgical residents interested in breast reconstruction and aesthetics, as well as the head of the department of plastic surgery. As an outcome, CMIPD agreed to establish an exchange program for residents to gain exposure to reconstructive and aesthetic surgery options in the UK.

Oncology
A team from the British/Nigeria Oncology Group (BNOG), in association with CMIPD, visited the Oncology unit. They engaged with the Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) involved in cancer patient care, conducting evaluations and assessments of equipment and services within the unit.
Outcomes included:
- Expert advice to improve service delivery
- Lectures for nursing staff
- Opportunities for sustainability, such as CMIPD/BNOG contributions to MDT development via telemedicine (short to medium-term)
Session Outcomes
The outreach resulted in several key outcomes, including;
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Provided expert equipment assessment and recommendations.
- Surgery: Established an exchange program for surgical residents and delivered lectures on cancer management and breast reconstruction.
- Oncology: Improved service delivery advice, nursing staff training, and enhanced MDT development opportunities through telemedicine.
Conclusion
The CMIPD and BNOG outreach at UCH in November 2019 significantly contributed to the hospital’s capabilities across various departments. By providing expert evaluations, training, and collaborative opportunities, the initiative has helped enhance medical services and staff competencies at UCH.
