Progress Report on the National Cervical Cancer Screening Project
The burden of cervical cancer is huge in Africa and Nigeria accounts for a disproportionately
large part of this burden, partly due to inadequate screening of its population. Current estimates
indicate that less than 10% of women older than 18 years have ever screened for cervical cancer
in Nigeria. HPV testing, cytology and visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) are
recommended screening tests with focus on HPV testing as the primary screening modality.
Currently, the competing healthcare demands and economic, social, and political issues in
Nigeria makes it very unlikely to effect this recommended “rapid transition” away from VIA
based programs in many communities. A comparative assessment of the three screening
methods in identifying high-grade CIN or cancer (CIN2+) via a large community-based survey
in urban and rural-dwelling women is of utmost importance to obtain further information on
the clinical utilities of the methods in our resource-limited settings.
To this effect, in May 2022, CMIPD set out to collaborate with various institutions, centers and
individuals across the country (Nigeria) in a cervical screening project titled; a community
based comparative study of cervical cancer screening approaches among rural and urban
Nigerian women: A national cross-sectional study. It is a multicenter study in four different
communities in each of the participating states in Nigeria.
CMIPD has given out over 20,000 cervical screening kits and signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with all its current partners on this huge project. A total of 17 tertiary
institutions were adopted for the project, however, by the end of 2024, 13 centers remained on the
project and over 5,000 women have been screened nationwide.
